This is hard for me to believe

Ligonier’s State of Theology reveals a train wreck among those who consider themselves Evangelicals. How did it get this bad? This is a dumpster fire.

There are a number of serious issues that came to light during the survey (see the link above) but the one I wanted to highlight was this:  73% of Evangelicals believe that “Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God.” Now for those who have studied theology or apologetics the quote is familiar. It is the Arian understanding of who Jesus is. Please read slowly. We have is a survey that tells us that 73% of Evangelical Christians have a Christology that mirrors the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Seriously, how can this be? 73% of Christians are Arians?

This is one of those times when it is hard to know what to say. We have reached the point where only 6% of the population of the US has a Biblical worldview. It is time to begin teaching our fellow evangelicals both Bible and doctrine. Sola Scriptura may work for those in a theologically sound tradition but independents and lone rangers need to anchor their theological beliefs in the orthodox Christian beliefs that shaped the church and which have been held by the church for almost two thousand years. Our free-range approach to the Bible is allowing the herd to wander out of the pasture. This is grievous news.

I gave the exam to some people I knew. It is as bad as the survey indicates. We just don’t ask the question so we don’t see the deficiency. People I knew were going to get the answers correct didn’t. We simply don’t take our faith seriously enough.
